Environmental Protection and Climate Change
Hungary is committed to the protection of our common natural environment, therefore fully supports all efforts to strengthen the environmental dimension of sustainable development.
Climate change is one of the major challenges facing the world today and dealing with this issue is a priority for the Government of Hungary. The Hungarian Parliament adopted a comprehensive strategy on the regulation of greenhouse gas emissions (Hungarian National Climate Change Strategy
) in 2007. Based on the strategy, the Government developed a new energy policy up to 2020 which takes into account energy-saving, energy efficiency, energy awareness, as well as energy security aspects.
Hungary contributes actively to international efforts aimed at environmental protection and participates in the drafting and implementation of relevant international agreements. Besides the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol, Hungary is also committed to cooperation in sustainable energy, water, and forestry policy issues.
Together with the European Union Hungary confirmed before 31st January 2011 its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% comparing to the level of 1990. Hungary is contributing to the international community’s efforts in the field of fast start climate financing with 6 million EURs.
