Description of the Third Budapest Human Rights Forum
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Hungary has launched a series of international human rights conferences in 2008 entitled as “Budapest Human Rights Forum”. Due to the active participation and valuable contribution of national and international human rights experts, representatives of international organizations, non-governmental organizations and governments the Forums were held successfully in 2008 and 2009.
The Third Budapest Human Rights Forum will be organized on 18–19 October 2010 in Budapest. The conference will host six panel debates with the participation of three or four panellists in each panel and a human rights expert as a moderator.
The objective of the six panels is to discuss certain human rights priorities of the forthcoming Hungarian presidency of the European Union as follows:
- “The construction of the global architecture for the prevention of genocide and mass atrocities: where are we standing? What would be the additional value of the Budapest Centre for the prevention of genocide and mass atrocities?”
- “Minorities and the challenges for human rights protection worldwide; the role of the European model in minority protection; the possible contribution of the Budapest Centre”
- “Access to water: source of conflicts?”
- “2011 Review of the Human Rights Council: questions and challenges I.”
- “2011 Review of the Human Rights Council: questions and challenges II.”
- “Optional Protocol to the Convention of the Rights of the Child: the challenges of the establishment of a complaint procedure mechanism”.
Within the confines of the conference the Deed of Foundation of the Budapest Centre for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities will be signed.
Third Budapest Human Rights Forum will be realized with the contribution of the Embassy of Canada and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
