Greece support for the Hungarian EU Presidency

Marilisa Xenogiannakopoulou, Greek Alternate Minister for Foreign Affairs visited Budapest to exchange views with her Hungarian counterpart, Enikő Győri, Minister of State for EU Affairs. The meeting took place as part of the preparations for the upcoming Hungarian Presidency. The partners discussed the current issues on the EU agenda, with special emphasis to December’s European Council.

Two main topics have been tabled during the meeting between the Greek Minister and the Hungarian Minister of State. The partners discussed current EU issues, with special emphasis on the agenda of the next European Council in December, including economic governance and the permanent crisis mechanism. Enikő Győri also outlined the priorities of the incoming Hungarian EU Presidency.

Greece ensured overall support for the Hungarian EU Presidency, Enikő Győri said after the meeting. Both member states agreed on the necessity of a strong Europe, and the need to preserve its internal cohesion. With regard to the EU’s new structure for economic governance and strengthened financial supervision, they took a stance on a fast and limited Treaty amendment.

Furthermore they discussed the enlargement strategy of the EU and notably Croatia’s accession, as well as the future, post 2013, financial perspectives.
