Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the website of the Permanent Mission of Hungary to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations in Geneva.

Our Mission has a challenging, but rewarding task to fulfill. International Geneva is a complex environment with a plethora of international organizations present and active here. The city is the human rights and humanitarian capital of the world, with the UN’s Human Rights Council having its yearly rounds of meetings here. Humanitarian organizations, such as the ICRC, the IFRC, the UNHCR, and the IOM also have a long history here, with their headquarters established long time ago, and with their meetings attracting several thousand delegates a year. Multilateral disarmament negotiations, including in the framework of the Conference on Disarmament, although at present at a stalemate, have great historical relevance and importance. And then there are those specialized agencies, such as the WHO, ITU, ILO, WIPO, CERN, or WMO, that not only require diplomatic skills and general knowledge of the political landscape, but also a great deal of expertise in their respective fields of competence.

Multilateral diplomacy provides great opportunities for a country committed to promote international cooperation, like Hungary. It is comparatively easy to build partnerships in this global environment. There is a lot of useful information available and the pool of experts in the various thematic fields is impressive. Our Mission, with the help of the relevant ministries in Budapest and in coordination with other EU Member States and the EU Delegation here in Geneva, tries to successfully navigate this complex landscape and represent Hungary’s specific interests and promote our common European values. Human rights are at the core of all our policies. We therefore actively participate in the work of the Human Rights Council and cooperate constructively and in a pro-active fashion with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and other human rights mechanisms. In the humanitarian field, Hungary, with its limited resources, aims at providing assistance and expertise whenever and wherever it can and it hosts several offices of key humanitarian organizations (UNHCR, IOM, IFRC, UNSPIDER). Health issues, especially the fight against non-communicable diseases, are also at the forefront of our attention. And to mention one of the “hottest topics” of today, there is a lot of on-going work in Geneva on cyberspace and Internet governance, which are considered to be of paramount importance both from a security- an economic, as well as from a human rights point of view.

I hope that through the information provided on this website the Visitor can catch a glimpse of our daily work and efforts. Please do not hesitate to contact the Mission in case you have any questions or enquiries about our activities.

I wish you all a useful browsing!
