Scout Jamboree

The Hungarian Chargé d’ Affaires met the Hungarian scouts who took part in the world gathering organised in Chelmsford to celebrate the scouting movement’s centenary. At the reception given for their scouts by the Visegrad countries, Klara Breuer pointed out that the followers of Baden-Powell have for many years been turning their attention to questions which today have become serious social issues in many countries. Among these are environment-aware education and helping the handicapped. Mrs Breuer met the president of the World Scout Organization, who spoke approvingly of the fact that a new generation of scout leaders has appeared in Hungary over the past 20 years. Those attending the jamboree were eager to give some impression of their own country. The Hungarians, for example, built a camp out of wood and introduced their visitors, among other things, to paprika stew, goulash soup, fried dough cakes, Hortobagy style pancakes and Somlo trifle. In the world Village they put various ancient Hungarian handicrafts on display, including wood carvings. The scouts from Pécs, the capital of Baranya county, brought to everyone’s attention the fact that their hometown will be a European City of Culture in 2010.
