Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi paid an official visit to Thailand on the invitation of his Thai counterpart Surapong Tovichakchaikul between 29 April and 1 May. During his visit, Mr. Martonyi paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and handed over an official invitation to Hungary by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Prime Minister Yingluck also invited his Hungarian counterpart to visit Thailand. During his talks with the prime minister, Deputy Prime Minister/Finance Minister Kittirat Na-Ranong, and the foreign minister, Mr. Martonyi discussed issues of bilateral cooperation as well as the relations between the European Union and the ASEAN. All partners fully agreed that it is in the interests of both sides to strengthen relations and deepen cooperation between the two countries.
During his visit, Foreign Minister Martonyi met with representatives of Thai companies and business associations to discuss ways to broaden economic and trade relations between Thailand and Hungary.
At a ceremony in the Hotel Mandarin Oriental, the two foreign ministers and Austria’s ambassador to Thailand unveiled a plaque commemorating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the first legation in Thailand of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
On the second day of his visit, the Hungarian Foreign Minister gave a lecture titled Global Opening –A New Feature of the Hungarian Foreign Policy: Implications on Southeast Asia and Thailand at the Centre for European Studies at Chulalongkorn University
