Political relations

The first political contacts between the two countries were established during the non-official visit of the then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew to Hungary in 1966. The Singaporean Prime Minister was accompanied by Foreign Minister Mr. S. Rajaratnam and Mr. Wee Kim Wee (later President of the Republic of Singapore). From the mid 1970’s onwards, consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs became regular and several ministerial level visits took place.

In 1990 during their consultations in New York, the Foreign Ministers of Hungary and Singapore concluded that the change in Hungary’s political system removed the barriers for developing further bilateral ties. The development in bilateral cooperation since the early 1990’s is evident on the basis of the increasing number of high level visits.

The official visit to Hungary in June 1993 of H.E. Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Senior Minister and former Prime Minister, was an event of key importance for the development of bilateral relations. As a result of this visit, important Singaporean investments were realized in Hungary.

In April 1997, H.E. Mr. Gyula Horn, Prime Minister of the Republic of Hungary, made an official visit to Singapore which created a favourable political climate for furthering bilateral economic relations.

In March 2001, H.E. Mr. Goh Chok Tong, Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore paid an official visit to Hungary. This highlighted the fact that Singapore viewed Hungary as a leading partner in the Central European region.

H.E. Mr. S.R. Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore made a private visit to Hungary from 7-12 June 2005.

In order to further develop bilateral trade and investment relations between Hungary and Singapore, H.E. Mr. Ferenc Gyurcsány, Prime Minister of the Republic of Hungary made an official visit to Singapore on 19 July 2005. The Hungarian Prime Minister was accompanied by H.E. Mr. János Kóka, Minister of Economy and Transport and H.E. Mr. Ferenc Somogyi, Minister for Foreign Affairs. While in Singapore, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Hungarian Investment and Trade Development Agency and the Singapore Business Federation.
