Hungary becomes founding member of the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies
 

The Community of Democracies, a network of over 100 democratic countries across the world has been created to advance global democracy through partnerships between civil society and governments. The Community held a ministerial level meeting in New York on the 22nd September, 2011, on the occasion of which, Hungary became founding member of its Governing Council. The privilege came as an appreciation of Hungary’s longstanding commitment to advance democratic values and promote democratic change throughout the world. Government and civil society representatives participating at the meeting highlighted the assistance provided by Hungary to the events unfolding during the Arab Spring, as well as the contribution of Hungary to the democratic changes in Libya, Egypt and Tunisia.

János Martonyi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, participating at the meeting underlined the challenges of promoting democratic values during the times of the economic and financial crisis.
