Hungarian contribution to the fight against the famine in the Horn of Africa

Leaders from more than 60 countries came together on 24 September 2011 at the United Nations mini-Summit on the crisis in the Horn of Africa to raise awareness of the scale and urgency of the humanitarian situation in the region. During the event more than 218 million USD of new humanitarian aid was pledged. Hungary was represented at the meeting by Mr. János Hóvári Deputy State Secretary for Global Affairs. Mr. Hóvári underlined in his statement the necessity of mid-term and long-term solutions. While making efforts to respond to the immediate needs of the population affected by the famine we must also address the underlying causes of fragility and do more to build resilience to future shocks. The Government of the Republic of Hungary has decided to contribute 50.000 USD to the activities of the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Somalia.
