Dear Visitor,

You are welcome to the homepage of the Embassy of the Republic of Hungary in Abuja, Federal Capital of Nigeria.

Diplomatic relations between Hungary and Nigeria were established on April 4, 1964 and the first Hungarian Embassy was inaugurated in Lagos in the same year. The Mission was transferred to Abuja, the new federal capital of Nigeria in the year of 2000.

This Embassy is also accredited to the Republic of Ghana, the Republic of Benin and the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, but as the only Hungarian diplomatic representation in West Africa it is it’s task to represent Hungary’s interests in the broadest possible sense in the whole region as well.

During the course of activity of this Mission special attention is devoted to the development of bilateral relations between Hungary and the accredited countries. Boosting economic cooperation between our respected states through the means of Diplomacy enjoys high priority on the Embassy’s agenda. Information is collected and mutually provided to businessmen interested in closer bilateral co-operation. Helping hand is given to students, willing to continue their academic studies in Hungary.

Among the last major achievements and events the Embassy largely contributed to, the visit of H.E. President Obasanjo should be mentioned above all. The visit was a landmark in the bilateral collaboration of our countries and gave a great push to the Hungarian-Nigerian economic and trade relations. As a direct result of the 2001 high level visit, bilateral turnover between our countries increased dozens of times, what only the global economic meltdown could slow temporarily down from mid 2008.

In May 2004 Hungary became a full fledges member of the European Union and has been playing an active role in formulating it’s common foreign and security policy, including the Africa strategy of the EU as well. The EU membership contributed largely to the development of the bilateral relations between Hungary and it’s West-African partners. Hungary joined the Schengen Zone in December 2007, opening extra opportunities in terms of granting the free movement of goods and individuals between the member states, but also put a grate deal of responsibility on the Hungarian consular and immigration network. The Hungarian Consulates, including the Consular Section of this Embassy do their outmost to respect the Schengen rules and norms while also enhancing and facilitating the visits of those foreign citizens being truly interested in the collaboration of ours in any possible fields.
