Gagauzia or Gagauz Yeri is an autonomous region in the South of Moldova, being a component part of the Republic of Moldova and created on the basis of the 1994 Gagauz Autonomy Act regulating the special legal status of Gagauzia. It was formed from such localities where 50% of inhabitants were Gagauz, as well as from the ones where the majority of inhabitants have voted to join the autonomy according to the results of a referendum.
