Conditions of travelling in Hungary

South Korean citizens may enter the territory of the Republic of Hungary without a visa and may stay there for a maximum period of ninety days during the six months from the date of his/her first entry without a separate permit provided that he/she meets the conditions required for staying. However, Korean citizens with the intention to enter employment or to stay more then 90 days in Hungary do need visas to travel to Hungary.

An airport transit visa is required to transit at Budapest Ferihegy International Airport. Although nationals of most countries are exempt from this regulation, please, check with Hungarian Embassy in Seoul to verify if you are required a visa for transiting at Budapest International Airport.

The processing of the visas may require a longer period of time. It could take even 30 days (In case of incoming visas 60 days).

Visas at Hungarian border crossing points are not issued.

Changes in the passport application process

as of 28 June 2009

From 28 June 2009, the Hungarian passport authority will start issuing second generation (biometric) e-passports for all applicants aged 12 or over. Passports issued after that date will have to contain the applicant’s fingerprints electronically. Previously issued passports, including first generation biometric (red cover) and non-biometric (blue cover) remain valid until their date of expiry.

Due to technical reasons related to this change and until further notice, it is not possible to apply for a passport containing the applicant’s fingerprints at Hungarian embassies. As soon as the technical conditions are established, all applicants aged 12 or over will have to submit their application in person at the nearest Hungarian embassy or consulate-general.

As a general rule, only applications for a temporary passport can be submitted at Hungarian embassies abroad.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

1. We recommend that you submit your application for a regular passport in Hungary at the Central Document Office in Budapest (KEKKH ‘Központi Okmányiroda’, 1133 Budapest, Visegrádi utca 110-112., tel: +36 1 443 4757 or 4758, kozponti.okmanyiroda@mail.ahiv.hu ). You will need to take an appointment to be able to submit your application (by phone or online). The passport can be issued within 5 working days if you choose the urgent procedure.

The applicable fees are as follows:

         Applicants aged 18 to 70:

                        - 5 year validity: HUF 7,500.00 (urgent procedure: HUF 15,000.00)

                        - 10 year validity: HUF 14,000.00 (urgent procedure: HUF 28,000.00)

Applicants aged 0-18 or 70 and above: HUF 2,500.00 (urgent procedure: HUF 5,000.00)

2. If you hold a valid Hungarian ID card, you may use that as travel document within the European Union.

3. Alternatively, if you hold no valid passport or ID card, you may request a temporary passport to enable you to enter Hungary with a view to lodge your application there. Please be aware that a temporary passport does not allow you to leave Hungary, and you will have to make sure that you obtain your new passport or ID card during your stay in Hungary. Id card is suitable as travel document just within the European Union.

4. For those who cannot travel to Hungary in the foreseeable future, a one-year temporary passport may be issued.

5. Exceptionally, i.e. if a temporary passport is not suitable for travelling to a third country, you may apply for a biometric passport (without fingerprints) valid for 1 year only. Please refer to our note on passport application. Please note that for the time being even children under 12 years can only apply for temporary passport as a general rule.
