The relationship between Japan and Hungary shows a good example of how two geographically distant and culturally different nations can deeply sympathize with each other and how people’s positive attitude can build flourishing economical and political relations. The establishment of official relations between the two countries began in the 19th century.

Who could be incurious about bonsai, sushi, geisha or the sumo and other Japanese martial arts? With the same attention Japanese public looking about for Hungarian wine and the specialities of our kitchen as well as for pieces of Hungarian arts and crafts and our world-famous porcelain. At the same time more and more Hungarian professionals take part in joint research projects at diverse technological institutes in Japan. Both countries have a very active civic exchange. The capital and different prefecture-based Japan-Hungary Friendship Associations boast with a membership well over one thousand.
