Urho Kekkonen, president of Finland, wrote about the Hungarian and Finnish relationship in 1969: The linguists laid down the foundations, but not only the narrow groups of intellectuals have been involved during the following generations. The communication has expanded also to brave, reformist people, to popular education, thus increasingly widening circles in both countries. Finns have realised the richness of this relationship when they learned how much wittiness, love of arts and many ideas the distant Hungarian brothers have. This is how the tradition of friendship has developed, which has been nurtured by mutual visits, music, literature, acting, science, education, friend circles, and many private initiatives during the decades.
